Generation No. 1

1.  REV. JOSEPH1 HULL was born Abt. 1595, and died November 19, 1665 in Isle of Shoals , Maine.  He married AGNES ? Abt. 1618.

Notes for REV. JOSEPH HULL:

The Reverend Joseph Hull matriculated at St. Mary Hall, Oxford and received his B.A.  14 November 1614. He was a teacher and curate at Colyton, co. Devon, then became rector and  vicar of Northleigh, Diocese of Exeter co. Devon, from 1621 until 1632, when he retired to Crewkerne, co. Somerset, his family home, and became interested in emigration to New England. He gathered his company of over 100 persons from the country-side about Crewkerne, and they sailed from the nearby port of Weymouth in the spring of 1635, the passenger list being dated March 20, 1635. They arrived in Boston, 5 May 1635.

He left with his wife Agnes, 25, seven children (Joane, 15; Joseph, 13; Tristram, 11; Elizabeth, 7; Temperence, 9; Grissell, 5; Dorothy, 3; and three servants: Judith French, 20; John Wood, 20; and Robet Dabyn, 28) (Called HALL on passenger list)

"Pioneers of Massachusetts"pg. 235, "He was allowed by the general court in 1635, to sit down at Wessaguscus (after called Weymouth), and 21 families with him. From 2 September 1635. He removed to Hingham. He gave his farewell sermon 5 May 1639, removed to Yarmouth and became pastor of the church. Children Benjamin, baptized at Hingham 24 March, 1639; Naomi, baptized in 1639; And Ruth baptized 9 May, 1641. Sarah died in 1647.

(Noyes)" Free man 2 September, and Episcopalian, and active in civil life, dissension soon came, even with his own children. In 1636 he was living in Hingham (now Hull), commissioner to end small causes. He departed Sept. 1638 & Mar. 1639, though still serving Weymouth, and preached his last in May 1639, and in Barnstable the same year, and was freeman 3 Dec. 1639. He left Barnstable that month and was in Yarmouth in 1641, and was excommunicated there for leaving Barnstable. He was rec'd back into Barnstable Church. Gov. Winthrop calling him "an excommunicated person and very contentious" shows him at York before May 1643. Apparently leaving all but the smallest children behind, he was at Launceston, co. Cornwall, in 1652. Called Mr. Joseph Hull, Minister, he returned to his children at Oyster River; later at the Shoals, these islands owing him 20 pounds when he died 19 Nov. 1665. Administered to widow Agnes, the chief item in the inventory -- his books, 10 pounds.

More About ELIZABETH HULL:

Notes for JOHN HEARD:

John Heard was a master carpenter. His age is unknown, but his wife was born in 1628.

In 1647, John was fined for calling Edward Godfrey, Governor of York County, Maine, "Old Knave". (Much is written of Godfrey in Noyes, "Dictionary of ME & NH". John was also in trouble for criticizing Cpt. Champernowne. (his genealogy is in Heard File)

John was fined 30 June, 1647 for speaking against him. In October of 1650, John was sued by Wither's attny for burning a house. Judgment was for John to rebuild the house. It is thought he burned it because after building it, he was not paid.

In 1650 John Heard was living on Champernowne's Island in Kittery, and was buying lands in York.  His deed from a Mr. Hook, 18 July 1650, states he had already built and fenced there. He had left York in June 1648 when he sold his York home to John Parker, carpenter, of Marblehead, but was back again in 1651.

In Dover, NH, where he was permanently settled by 1654, he was much relied on by Major Waldren. John Heard's "mark" on legal papers was a carpenter's square.

"Illustrated Hist. of York Co., ME", "The first selectmen of Kittery, after incorporation in 1647 were Nicholas Shapleigh, JOHN HEARD, and Nicholas Frost."
