William Aldred of the
Parish and Township of Manchester, linen and cotton dyer, and Catherine
Robinson of the Township of Salford in the Parish of Manchester were married in
this Church by Bans, published on Sundays, License of the Rev. Mr. Humphrey
Owen, Surrogate, this fifth day of July in the year 1783. (Register of
Marriages, Cathedral & Parish Church of Manchester, England.)
William Aldred was
12th of 13 children of Wiliam Aldred and Sarah (Ashton?). When at the age of
23, William Aldred married Catherine Robinson, who was 3 months his senior, he
was a member of the ancient guild of dyers.
At age 34, they made
the journey to America. William was a Methodist, and objected to paying taxes
to the Church of England, and he was more liberal than those in power in
England. Whatever motivated them to

six of the immigrants quite early to a better financial situation than their

Notes for CHARLES MCCLELLAND:
May 26, 1965 letter
written by W.T. (Bud McClelland) gives this account:
" Our grandfather, CHARLES McCLELLAND,
with his two brothers Nathaniel and Henry, left their home in Maryland in 1849
to travel by wagon train to California. Their father had settled in Maryland
after arriving in the U.S. from the area around Glasgow, Scotland,[Since it is
documented Wm. was born in 1791 in Cecil County, Maryland, his father was
probably who Bud referred to as being from Scotland] where for centuries the
McClelland Clan had lived under the protection of the MacNab Tartan. However
the three sons joined the wagons rolling west with family and belongings. When
the wagon reached the Mississippi River in the area of the present Davenport,
Iowa, they encountered semi-disaster making the crossing. Their loss in cattle,
wagons and belongings was so great that they could not continue.
Being farmers, they took advantage of the
Iowa Territory being opened for settlement and obtained Government land grants
in the area of the confluence of the Des Moines and Racoon Rivers. One of their
enterprises was a soft coal mine out in the present Highland Park area of Des
Moines, near the old McClelland homstead where Henry spent the rest of his
life.
The mine was a successful venture and part
of it extended under the Des Moines River. One night, one of their unfriendly
competitors dropped a dynamite charge into the river and blew a hole so deep in
the river bottom that it flooded the mine. Thus ended the mining by the
McClellands."
He was the farmer and
raised the good old Iowa corn and hogs and a passal of children.
Upon his death, in 1903, His estate was
$200. Probate records show it was to be divided: Sarah Miller, 38, Des Moines;
Alice Trowbridge, 37, Des Moines; Emeline Townsend, 33, Hutchison, Kansas;
